“Things to See by Ear Unheard”: Poets Expressing the Ineffable

How does one write about experiences that transcend or defy language? What means are available to the writer who wishes to speak of the spiritual/mystical outside the bounds of what’s recognized by one’s religion and/or society? This panel will discuss ways of speaking about spiritual experience in Dickinson’s work, as well as other modern poets including Bishop, Clifton, Hirshfield, and Harjo. Each panelist will speak to how they’ve wrestled with the ineffable in their own work, including the use of nature to get at spiritual yearning; the tensions between religious institutions and personal spirituality; and the queering of notions of god and authority.

This program is designed with a limited capacity to increase participation and build community. Registrants should be willing to be active participants in this workshop, and may be asked to turn on their camera and unmute themselves.

Make sure to register for this free program in advance!
